Resume Guide for Finance and Accounting Jobs: From Analyst to CFO

TL;DR

Finance and accounting resumes must be quantified, credentialed, and technically specific. Lead with metrics (revenue managed, cost savings, forecast accuracy, audit outcomes), list relevant certifications prominently (CPA, CFA, CMA), and include the technical tools you use (Excel modeling, SQL, SAP, NetSuite, Hyperion). Tailor your resume to the specific level -- an analyst highlights technical execution while a CFO highlights strategic impact and P&L ownership.

Why Finance Resumes Are Different

Finance and accounting are quantitative fields. Every other industry talks about "data-driven" work. Finance and accounting actually live it. Your resume needs to reflect that.

A marketing manager can write "improved brand awareness" and get away with it. A financial analyst who writes "performed financial analysis" has said nothing useful. Finance hiring managers want to see the numbers: the size of the portfolio, the accuracy of the forecast, the dollar value of the cost savings, the revenue under management.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of financial analysts is projected to grow 9% through 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. Accountant and auditor roles are projected to grow 6%. The demand is there. But so is the competition -- especially for roles at top firms, Big Four accounting firms, and Fortune 500 finance teams.

This guide covers what to put on your resume at each career level, from entry-level analyst to CFO.

Certifications: What Matters and Where to List Them

In finance and accounting, certifications carry outsized weight. They signal technical competence and commitment to the profession in a way that job experience alone does not.

CertificationFull NameBest ForTypical Requirement
CPACertified Public AccountantAccountants, auditors, controllers, CFOs150 credit hours, exam, experience
CFAChartered Financial AnalystInvestment analysts, portfolio managers, equity researchBachelor's + 3 exams + 4,000 hours experience
CMACertified Management AccountantFP&A, management accounting, controllersBachelor's + exam + 2 years experience
FMVAFinancial Modeling & Valuation AnalystAnalysts, associates, investment bankingOnline coursework + exam
CIACertified Internal AuditorInternal auditors, complianceBachelor's + exam + 2 years experience
CFPCertified Financial PlannerFinancial planning, wealth managementBachelor's + exam + 3 years experience
EAEnrolled AgentTax professionalsExam (no degree required)

Where to list certifications: If you have a CPA, CFA, or CMA, put it in your name line: "Jane Smith, CPA" at the top of the resume. These credentials are that important -- they belong next to your name, not buried in a section at the bottom. Also list them in a dedicated Certifications section with the year obtained.

In-progress certifications: If you're actively pursuing a certification, list it: "CFA Level II Candidate (June 2026)" or "CPA Exam -- 3 of 4 sections passed." This shows commitment even before completion.

Common Finance Resume Mistakes

  1. No numbers. A finance resume without metrics is like a balance sheet without balances. Quantify everything.
  2. Listing duties instead of impact. "Responsible for monthly close" vs. "Led monthly close process for a $100M entity, reducing cycle time from 10 to 5 days." The second one gets interviews.
  3. Burying certifications. CPA, CFA, and CMA belong next to your name and in a prominent section. Don't make the reader hunt for them.
  4. Generic technical skills. "Proficient in Microsoft Office" adds nothing. "Excel: 3-statement modeling, DCF analysis, VBA automation, Power Query" tells a story.
  5. Ignoring industry keywords. Finance roles are often screened by ATS. Include terms from the job description: GAAP, IFRS, SOX, ASC 606, FP&A, variance analysis, close management.
  6. Too long. Analysts: 1 page. Directors and controllers: 1-2 pages. CFOs: 2 pages maximum. Nobody reads page 3.
