What Makes a Resume Template ATS-Friendly?
Standard Section Headings
ATS software looks for standard labels like "Experience," "Education," and "Skills." Creative labels like "My Journey" or "Toolbox" confuse parsers and can cause your resume to be misread.
Clean, Parseable Layout
Single-column layouts are easiest for ATS to read. While two-column designs can work, they need to be structured so the reading order stays logical when parsed top-to-bottom.
No Text in Images or Headers
ATS cannot read text embedded in images, graphics, or document headers/footers. All important information -- especially your name and contact details -- must be in the document body.
Simple Formatting
Bold, italic, and bullet points are fine. Tables, text boxes, columns created with tabs, and unusual characters can break ATS parsing. Stick to clean formatting that translates to plain text.
Standard Fonts
Use widely supported fonts like Arial, Calibri, Georgia, or Times New Roman. Custom or decorative fonts may not render correctly across systems and can cause parsing errors.
PDF or DOCX Format
Most modern ATS handle both PDF and DOCX well. Avoid formats like .pages, .odt, or rich-text. When in doubt, submit a well-structured PDF -- it preserves your layout across all devices.
